Wave Physics is the study of energy transfer through space and matter without moving physical mass. In this comprehensive guide, master transverse and longitudinal waves, the wave equation ($v = f\lambda$), sound waves, light behavior, reflection, refraction, and wave mechanics formulas with clear notes and practice MCQs.
A wave transfers energy from one point to another without permanently displacing the medium. The two main types: transverse waves (oscillation perpendicular to direction of travel — e.g. light, rope waves) and longitudinal waves (oscillation parallel to direction of travel — e.g. sound).
Wave speed equals frequency times wavelength. This applies to all waves. If frequency doubles and wavelength halves, speed remains constant. Light travels at c = 3×10&sup8; m/s in a vacuum. Sound travels at approximately 340 m/s in air at room temperature.
Reflection: Wave bounces off a surface. Angle of incidence = angle of reflection.
Refraction: Wave changes speed when entering a different medium, causing it to change direction (bend). Described by Snell Law: n&sub1;sinθ&sub1; = n&sub2;sinθ&sub2;.
Diffraction: Waves spread around obstacles or through gaps. Greatest effect when wavelength ≈ gap size.
Interference: Superposition of two waves. Constructive interference (crests align) gives larger amplitude. Destructive interference (crest meets trough) gives smaller or zero amplitude. Before exploring wave behaviors, read our beginner guide on how to learn physics easily to strengthen your conceptual basics.
